It’s been more than a month since Lily Ledbetter was found unconscious in her apartment in the Virgin Islands. No one knows what killed her.
The 22-year-old college student was on vacation from her home state of Alabama to the island.
Ledbetter planned to work at an animal shelter this summer. She is a good dancer and is majoring in project management at Auburn University.
But on June 6, a worried citizen said she was unconscious. After twenty minutes, she was pronounced dead.
A spokesman for the Virgin Island Police Department, Glen Dratte, told The Independent on Tuesday that toxicology results are still being waited for. He did not say more about what may have caused the young woman to die so quickly, though.
What we know about the case so far:
What took place?
Around 12:33 p.m. on the day she died, a “concerned citizen” called 911 to say that Ledbetter was not awake.
Ledbetter’s apartment was in the Estate Enighed neighborhood on the island of St. John. When first responders got there, she was not breathing.
The police said she was dead at 12:53 p.m.
Dr. Francisco Landron told Fox News Digital that Ledbetter’s body was autopsied, but the results were not clear.
“It was mostly a negative autopsy,” the medical examiner told the news source. “There is no damage and no clues as to what caused the death.”
Where does the investigation go from here?
The Virgin Islands Police Department told The Independent that toxicology results are still being waited on by investigators.
If those results don’t help figure out how and why the person died, Dr. Landron said he would do “forensic microscopic studies on tissues such as the heart.” The medical examiner said that they don’t think there was any foul play.
“It might be alcohol.” The doctor said, “It could be opiates.”
What did Lily Ledbetter do?
Her obituary says that Ledbetter grew up in Opelika, Alabama.
“I was amazed to see Lily dance.” “She was completely captivating, and her passion lit up the stage,” the tribute to the young woman who died said. “Lily was a skilled dancer who won many awards.” Lily was truly free in dance—free to be herself and free to express herself.
In 2019, she graduated with honors from Opelika High School, where she was on the band, dance team, and show choir.
Mandy Moore, her former dance teacher, wrote on Facebook, “I will always remember the sparkle in your eye and the love that filled the room when you walked in.” “When I saw you a few weeks ago, I wish I had held on and never let go.” Thank you so much for giving me one of those big Lily hugs when you got home from my dance class. The love and light you brought to our studio will always be there.
Ledbetter went to Auburn University to get a degree in building science and project management. She also competed with the women’s rowing club there.
She was going to graduate in the following year.
Ledbetter had been working at an animal shelter in St. John before she died.
“She was a good person.” “It’s really sad,” a coworker told Fox News Digital, but they didn’t want to be named. “She was a great kid who loved playing with the dogs and cats.”
