In a moving statement, Mitchell’s family talked about his long and successful acting career, in which he played a wide range of characters, from an Olympic hopeful to an end-of-the-world survivor, an astronaut, and a superhero.

Mitchell was diagnosed with ALS in 2018 and has shown a lot of courage in dealing with the relentless progress of this crippling neurodegenerative disease that kills nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
By 2019, he needed to use a wheelchair to get around. In 2020, he decided to talk about his health problems in public. Looking back on the first effects of his diagnosis, Mitchell honestly talked about how it completely changed his life and how hard it was for him and his wife to go through the stages of grief and acceptance together.
He told People in 2020, “I clearly remember the stark simplicity and poignant beauty of how my wife and I stood united in the trenches, bracing ourselves for the seismic impact of a reality so severe, one that would irrevocably change the course of our lives.” “We mourned and grieved deeply, trying to make sense of the vast unknown.”
