There’s something truly captivating about the world we live in. Despite the notion that we’ve already discovered everything there is to know, the internet constantly proves otherwise. It allows us to witness and learn about things that our ancestors could only dream of. From exotic animals to peculiar insects, there’s always something new to discover.
Recently, a photo went viral of a creature that a woman from Sydney, Australia claimed to have found in her backyard. The creature had pink-and-black eyes that looked like they had been haphazardly stuck on by a child. When I first saw it, I thought it had to be fake, and I wasn’t alone in that assumption.
The woman turned to social media for answers, asking others to help identify the strange creature. The response was a mix of confusion and amusement. One person commented, “I seriously thought you stuck googly eyes on a weirdly shaped stocking,” while another simply exclaimed, “That is the cutest thing I have ever seen.”
It turns out that the creature is a type of hawkmoth caterpillar, confirmed by Andrew Mitchell, an entomologist at the Australian Museum. He explained that these caterpillars are commonly found on vines, including grape vines. They have a wide distribution, spanning from Western Australia to Queensland and all the way to Sydney.
These caterpillars use their brown coloring to blend in with their surroundings and their striking eyes to deter predators. While they may puff up their bodies and strike in self-defense, they are completely harmless.
So, if you happen to spot one of these “googly-eyed” critters in your yard, don’t panic! They are just part of the fascinating biodiversity that surrounds us. Share in the wonder of nature and embrace the unexpected.
