The emotionally charged song “Take You With Me,” which is a dedication to Luke Combs’ kid and is featured on his brand new album Gettin’ Old, which contains a total of 18 songs, is now available for purchase.
Together with James McNair and Rob Williford, Combs penned the song. In it, a future version of Combs reflects on the joyful times he shared with his son Tex Lawrence and the life lessons he passed on to him along the road.
Combs recalls that in the first verse of the song, he asks his father, “Daddy, what does that mean, that little turtle and a rabbit? He sat me in that seat, showed me the wheel and how to grab it. He said, ‘I’ll work the pedals if you climb up on my knee. I’ll take you with me.’” Combs then goes on to sing about how he was told that he would be taken with him.
For the entirety of the song, the singer contemplates a number of other happy father-son experiences he has shared with his offspring, all of which are based on a profound desire to relive those priceless days.
“If it were up to me, we’d participate in each and every activity together. / And when you’re young like that, you believe that those days will go on for the rest of your life / In the chorus, Combs reflects on the fact that he “didn’t know back then how much those words would mean / ‘I’ll take you with me.’”
Combs said on March 20 that he and his wife Nicole are expecting their second kid together. This will be the couple’s first child. In the tweet where he made the unexpected announcement, he also gave fans a sneak peek at the song “Take You With Me.”
Of Gettin’ Old, Combs said in his interview that the song is “about the stage of life I’m in right now.” One that I’m sure a lot of us are currently going through, have gone through in the past, or will go through in the future.”
He goes on to say that the song is about “coming of age, loving where life is now but at the same time missing how it used to be, continuing to fall for the one you love and loving them no matter what, living in the moment but still wondering how much time you have left, family, friends, being thankful, and leaving a legacy.”
This coming Saturday will mark the beginning of Combs’ eagerly awaited world tour (March 25). The first stop on the 35-city tour will be in Arlington, Texas, followed by stops in numerous locations around the United States and in other countries, including as Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, and France. On October 19, Combs will perform his final gig of this leg, which will take place in London.
